Motheread/Fatheread® Arizona
Frequently Asked Questions
What organizations are eligible and what is their level of involvement?
Any nonprofit organization that can fulfill the terms of participation is a potential site. Motheread/Fatheread® Arizona currently operates in community centers, adult basic education programs, community colleges, correctional facilities, Even Starts, Head Starts, libraries, literacy organizations, elementary schools, and social service agencies. To become a Motheread/Fatheread® Arizona site, AHC requires that the organization send two staff members to a four-day Training Institute, and that staff, rather than volunteers, are trained. Sites pay their travel expenses for the Institute, and Motheread/Fatheread® Arizona partially underwrites their tuition costs.
What happens when I take Motheread® back to my community?
First of all, Motheread/Fatheread® Arizona won’t send you back empty-handed. In addition to financially assisting with the four-day Training Institute, we provide new sites with the first series of books for parents to keep, as well as promotional materials and technical assistance for the duration of your program. We’re here to help make your program work!
A typical Motheread/Fatheread® Arizona series is designed for small groups of 12 to 15 repeat adult participants, and should consist of 8 to 12 discussion sessions at least 90 minutes in length, so that adults can make progress in their literacy skills. During each session, parents will read exceptional children’s literature together; they’ll discuss themes, characters, and points of view; and they’ll learn how to share stories with their children. The target audience is under-literate parents and caregivers, so sites that do not already serve this population should partner with local agencies that do.
Who provides the funding for Motheread/Fatheread® Arizona?
Motheread/Fatheread® Arizona receives its funding from various corporations and foundations. Individual sites are responsible for financing any additional Motheread® discussion series beyond what Motheread/Fatheread® Arizona provides.
