Paul J. Schatt Memorial Fund
Established November 2005 at the request of Laura Schatt
"Paul Schatt brought a special joy to life at this newspaper, in this Valley."
--The Arizona Republic
Elected to the Arizona Humanities Council Board of Directors in September 1999, Paul Schatt brought to AHC broad journalistic experience and a lifelong love of learning. His 43-year career with The Arizona Republic and The Phoenix Gazette included copy boy, reporter, metro editor, editor of the Sunday supplement, and editor of the editorial pages. He even delivered the newspaper when he was a boy. At the time of his death at age 60, following heart surgery, he was an assistant editorial page editor. Paul was a champion for young journalists, and influenced both students and professionals through his work at Arizona State University, the Pulliam Fellows program, and the National Conference of Editorial Writers.
Paul was a strong proponent of AHC programs that encouraged literacy and reading, such as Motheread® Arizona, Community Book Discussions, and the Arizona Book Festival. He served on the Membership Committee, the Executive Committee, and chaired the Contemporary Issues Committee. His fellow Board members found him engaging, open-minded, friendly, and witty. His smile and hearty greeting could light up a room.
AHC is honored to share in preserving Paul’s memory, and to help ensure that his strong commitment to the work of the Arizona Humanities Council can now continue through the support of his many friends. Proceeds from the Memorial Fund will be used to support ongoing AHC activities, particularly those dealing with books and literacy. If you would like to donate, please click on the button below. Your gift is tax-deductible. Mrs. Schatt will receive a list of donors to the Memorial Fund.
